Chapter Twenty-Eight

“You despicable fiend!” Enrique roared and grabbed at the display case Martinez held. His heavy hand slammed against her shoulder as she flinched away.

Tanner crouched, reached out with his left hand, snatched a fistful of Enrique’s parachute pants, and yanked down hard.

The over-taxed waistband had long ago surrendered any semblance of elasticity, and the pants instantly pooled in a knee-high heap. The bunched material trapped his legs as the big man made another move towards Martinez, and he toppled in slow motion, arms waving frantically, the impact of his landing softened only somewhat by his unfortunate assistant, who, in racing to help, took the full force of his boss’ weight. The duo crashed to the ground with seismic impact.

Martinez saw Benito wriggling out from under his boss. “Stay there,” she said, reinforcing the command with a solid kick to the ribs. Benito stayed still. She bent over him and pulled a short-barreled .38 Special from a pocket holster clipped to his belt.

“I thought we were going to have the locals do this,” Martinez said to Tanner, as she checked the pistol’s cylinder. It was fully loaded.

Tanner shrugged. “I felt the moment.”

She shook her head. “I’ll watch these guys, you want to go radio them? And grab the cuffs?”

“Be right back.”

Tanner went to the car and contacted the officers from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department who were parked nearby. He told them the suspects had been placed under arrest and were about to be restrained.

“You already made the bust?” the officer asked.

“Yeah,” Tanner said.

“But you’re U.C., right?”

“Yeah, not anymore. Frankly, I was hoping to trigger some resistance, and we got some.”

“Why would you hope for that?”

“I have my reasons,” Tanner said. “You guys come on in, we’ll have them all wrapped up for you.”

He grabbed some flex cuffs and went back inside. Martinez stood over the two prone men, the .38 pointed directly at Benito. Tanner swapped cuffs-for-gun with Martinez, and while she secured the two men he went through the Miranda spiel. That done, the two agents slumped into chairs to wait for the police to arrive.

“Ricky my man, that was an incredibly stupid move,” Tanner said. “Honestly, I thought you were smarter than that.”

“It’s Enrique,” the big man huffed. “And what you think is of no interest to me.”

“Well, it oughta be. If things had gone easier, you would have been up for CITES violations, poaching of course, some Lacey Act stuff. All of which you could have thrown a bunch of money at, dropped a few LBs at some minimum-security prison for a handful of years at most, and that’s that. Now you’re looking at assault on Federal officers, resisting arrest, a conspiracy charge or two, and just general assholiness. Violent crime means violent time, Ricky.”

Enrique had recovered sufficiently to take the offense. “Spare me your threats and gloating. You and your partner clearly used undue force. My corps of attorneys will be filing a rather daunting lawsuit. As ethnic minorities, Benito and I are not about to stand still for such brutality.
