CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Jason Snyder didn’t like being without his partner.

It wasn’t that he was a follower. In fact, he’d been captain of his college football team. Leader of his regiment in the Navy. He’d always been one to take charge.

But when it came to Nora Price, they worked so well together, sometimes he felt like they were two halves of the same body. They complemented each other so well; she was always picking up things he missed, and vice versa.

So as he drove deeper down the logging road, constantly looking upward and expecting a giant tree to crash down on the hood of his sedan, he had the creeping feeling that he was missing something. The thick trees made the place midnight-dark and eerie, and it was so quiet, with his only company the occasional firefly sparking in front of him.

From the maps he’d checked, this work location appeared to be the closest to all three kidnappings. In fact, it was practically in the middle of three sites. If Blackburn County was a wheel, the kidnapping locales occurred on the outer edges of the wheel, and this site was in the very center. The cabin Miranda had been kept in was off one of those roads. Not only that, there were rural roads leading to each one of the kidnapping sites from this worksite. It only made sense that the suspect had used them to commit his crimes.

At least, it had sounded like a good idea at the time.

Now, he was losing confidence in his theory by the minute. These woods were vast. And he’d been driving for half an hour, swerving down unnamed streets that all looked exactly the same. He’d gotten all turned around and had no idea if he’d even find his way out, much less anyone who’d seen anything relating to the crime.

I bet this turns up a whole lot of nothing. I should’ve probably just gone with Nora, he thought.

It was not just because he thought he was at his best, as an FBI agent, when he was with her. The truth was, he worried about her. She was like the little sister he’d never had. She’d always been a little unpredictable and wobbly. Other agents asked how he could stand it, but he’d never minded.

But he couldn’t deny that ever since they’d taken on this case, she’d gotten … well, worse.

There were times when she’d stare out into space, so far away, he had no idea where she could be. Or when she’d jump, suddenly, at the mention or sight of something that would’ve been innocuous to some people. He’d never forget the time a witness in another case, an old banker, had pulled out a pocket watch from his coat. Nora had all but gone ballistic. She’d begun hyperventilating, and he thought she might pass out. It was always something like that, keeping him on his toes.

But yesterday, in the cabin, she’d definitely been upset. And now, he knew it was with good reason—she
