Did you know?

Sausages became known as bangers during the First World War. Because meat was scarce at the time butchers added more water to the mix, which turned to steam during cooking, causing the sausages to burst open with a loud bang.

Cornish pasties have been made for almost 300 years and were originally baked for the tin miners who worked deep underground in filthy conditions. The pastry was wrapped around beef, sliced potato, swede and onion, and was so thick that it stayed warm for several hours. By lunchtime, however, the pasty was pretty dirty so the miners ate the contents and threw the pastry away. Thankfully, today you can eat it all.

Pork pies also have a long and colourful history and can lay claim to being one of the oldest known ‘packaged’ foods. The origins of the pork pie date back to medieval times and they were said to have been taken by the knights going to the Crusades. As with the Cornish pasty, the pork-pie pastry was mostly used to protect the meat contents and was often left uneaten.
