ãCursebreaker Pendantã
A magic item capable of nullifying any magical spell, no matter how powerful. Can only be used once.
âHoooly crap...â I gulped.
ãWhat? What is it?!ã asked Dora-chan, badgering me to dispel his curiosity.
âA Cursebreaker Pendant, apparently.â
ãOh. Okay, donât care anymore.ã
ãSui wishes there was meat inside instead...ã
Two of my familiars immediately lost interest, but I had the exact opposite reaction. âH-Hey, Fel, I get that itâs a one-time-use item, but when it says it can nullify âany magical spell,â does that include, like, curse-inflicted status ailments?â
ãIndeed. My appraisal would seem to indicate just that.ã
Felâs appraisal skill was higher than mine, so he tended to get more detailed information from it. If even his skill told him that, though, it seemed safe to say that my first impression was correct.
âAnd that means...â
ãYou would do well to wear it at all times.ã
One very important fact had remained in a corner of my mind ever since I received my first blessing from the gods. That blessing, and all the ones that followed it, was designated as âsmall.â As the gods had explained to me, a small blessing would make magic easier to cast and would nullify all status ailments, with just two exceptions: spells cast by an especially powerful magic user and instant death effects.
Those exceptions, of course, were the most important part of that explanation. After all, they meant that if I were unlucky enough to run into a really powerful caster, it was totally possible that my blessings wouldnât be able to cancel out their spells!
Iâd picked up enough small blessings over time that their protection apparently added up to equal that of a normal-sized blessing, but that didnât stop me from worrying about it a little. I mean, no matter how many of them I got, they were still small blessings. Thatâs why I was more than happy to take Fel up on his idea and claim the pendant for myself. âYeah, sounds good. Iâll use it,â I said, immediately putting it on.
Ha ha ha! All right, thatâs one less nagging worry to keep me up at night! I didnât anticipate running into any incredibly powerful mages in the foreseeable future, but it was always good to plan for the worst-case scenario. Having an item like this was a huge weight off my mind, thatâs for sure. I just wished Iâd be lucky enough to stumble across a magic item that could nullify instant death effects...not that anything that implausibly convenient would ever actually happen.
ãWith that, our business here is finished. Let us depart,ã said Fel.
We made our way out of the antsâ nest. This time I gave in and let Fel carry me on his back, which made the trip fly past in the blink of an eye.
â â â â â
We emerged from the forest army antsâ nest, happy to breathe the outside worldâs air once again...though since we were still in a dungeon, whether or not it counted as the âoutside worldâ was very much in question. Regardless, we quickly resumed our exploration of the forest.
