Chapter 5

“I thought we left the door to the basement closed,” Horace wheezed as the Chillblaines brothers entered the mansion.

“I guess I forgot to close it after I stashed the gorilla suit down there,” Hector replied.

Though the voices sounded muffled, Buddy and Cally, who now were on the basement floor, heard the term “gorilla suit,” and they glanced at each other. Then they heard the basement door close, and they were in total darkness.

“Cally,” Buddy whispered to his sister. “I think I saw some curtains covering the basement windows before the door was closed. Maybe we can open the curtains and let in some light down here.”

“Good idea,” Cally whispered back.

The two felt their way to one of the basement walls, and then they reached above their heads until they found a pair of curtains covering one of the basement’s small windows. They parted the curtains and light instantly poured into the room. Now they could see to part several more pairs of curtains, which they did.

They both scanned the large room they were in. A closed door at the far end of the wall opposite them looked like a possible way of escape if it was only unlocked. They tiptoed over to it and to their great relief found that it was indeed unlocked.

“Just like the rest of the doors in this place,” Buddy muttered. Then he turned to Cally. “I don’t think we should make our escape just yet, Cal.”

She stared at him in disbelief. “What do you mean? Are you loony, Bud? What if the Chillblaines come down here and find us?” She spoke a little louder than she meant to.

“Shhh!” Buddy whispered with his finger to his lips. “Well, Sis, the Chillblaines don’t know we’re down here, and the chances are that they won’t come down right away since they closed the basement door only a few minutes ago. I mean, if they had intended to look for something, they probably would’ve done it when they first came home.” Buddy wasn’t convinced that what he’d just said made any sense, especially since Cally was still looking at him as if he’d gone crazy. “Anyway,” he continued, “I’d like to explore down here for a bit and see if we can find that gorilla suit that was mentioned.”

Cally wanted to exit the basement door and get out of there as quickly as possible, but no way was she leaving without her brother, so she reluctantly gave in.

They searched quietly among some boxes but found nothing for what they were looking. Buddy was about to call the search off when Cally noticed a large bag that was partially hidden behind a blanket, suspended on a hanger from a water pipe in one of the ceiling joists. It was the kind of bag that clothes were put in from the dry cleaners, and it was hanging in one of the basement corners. They went to the bag and partially unzipped it. They reached inside it and felt that the material was furry.
