Chapter 8: Plan
With shared unease, the three girls followed Dr. de Roux and Lucy away from the lake, their thoughts still clouded by the chilling event that had just occurred. The sun dipped lower in the sky, lengthening the shadows through the forest as they traversed the campgrounds.
Dahlia couldn't shake the feeling that something about the lake was familiar, something she had seen before. Her heart caught in her throat as she glanced back at the now-still water.
It was the nightmare. The pond she nearly jumped into was Lake Cohokia. Dahlia hesitated, her mind racing with possibilities and questions.
"Your cabin is this way," Dr. de Roux said after a long walk, gesturing for them to follow her down a winding path lined with towering evergreen trees. The air smelled of damp earth, a mix of moss and pine needles crunching beneath their feet. "They were designed to blend in with the natural surroundings. We take great pride in preserving the beauty of this land."
Soon, they arrived at a cluster of A-frame cabins nestled among the trees, each identical with its wooden exterior and triangular shape. Dr. de Roux led them to one of the cabins, its door adorned with a small plaque reading "Cabin 5" in old-fashioned lettering.
"Here we are, your home away from home," she announced, pulling the door open with a flourish. "I hope you find it comfortable."
"Thanks," Aria said, managing a smile despite the lingering tension that seemed to cling to them like the damp air. She stepped inside, followed closely by Serena and Dahlia.
The cabin's interior was cozy, with two bunk beds lining one wall, each made up in soft white cotton. Their bags had already been placed on the floor beside their beds, organized with a precision that suggested someone had taken great care in ensuring everything was perfect for their arrival.
"Wow, this is actually kind of nice," Aria admitted. She dropped her backpack onto her bed with a muffled thud, turning to face her friends.
Dahlia took a deep breath, trying to push away her fears for the moment. Whatever awaited them, they would face together. And somehow, that thought brought her a small measure of comfort.
Dr. de Roux did not walk into the cabin but said from the doorway, "You'll find battery-operated lanterns that hang on a hook above each bed. The restroom facility adjacent to this cabin has a motion sensor light, should you need it at night. Marcella will be back to bring you supper very soon. Is there anything that I can do for you girls while I am here?"
The girls looked at each other and then back at Dr. de Roux. Dahlia shook her head, and Serena said, "No, thank you," quietly.
Once the door clicked shut behind them, Dahlia glanced at Serena and Aria, who were examining their surroundings. "Guys," she whispered, "I need to tell you something."
Serena looked up from her bag, "What's up?"
Dahlia continued, "I think I remember the lake..."
"Yeah, you had déjà vu," Aria murmured, her eyes meeting Dahlia's, "I've heard that can happen with traumatic experiences.
