Under my fists the punchbag feels like a bag of cement. I put my shoulder behind the punches and all it does is hurt. Everything hurts, and achieves nothing.

Sweating and frustrated I grab the bag, hugging it.

“Berk,” I call out to the massive ex-marine, “Come spar with me, I need something real.”

“Not today, Camo, I’ve already gone some with Edwards and my bicep isn’t healed.”

“Pussy,” I taunt him.

“I can hurt you if you like,” Blue offers, “If you want to feel something.”

“I’ll pass, I’m pissed with myself, I don’t have a deathwish.”

“Who is the pussy now?” Blue arches an eyebrow at me.

I’m thinking about resigning. I’m thinking about quitting. Going home to Ethan and laying it all out for him to judge. If Ethan will take him back I’ll shut it all down. But if I have a choice, if he gives me a choice, I want to make it up to my team first.

These aren’t bad men and they have chosen to do something dangerous for good reasons. I have let them down, leading them the wrong way. Shit, I’m forty one, I should have learned how to do this by now.

I rest my sweating forehead against the course weave of the punchbag.

When did I fall into the pattern of thinking I was the only one with the right ideas?

I think it’s because I had Ethan. Ethan’s love and his acceptance of me made me think I was bulletproof, always right. Which clearly I am not. I’m just a really good liar at the end of the day, and being good at that isn’t enough.
