Chapter 12

Anya thought at first what she was hearing was the buzz of a noisy insect. A low droning noise that filtered down from the air hole they’d dug to the surface. But then voices reached her. Men calling back and forth to one another.

“Are you sure these coordinates are right?”

“Hey, over here!”

“My God, how could anyone still be alive under that?”

“Stan, bring the backhoe up here.”

Anya jackknifed to a seated position and reached beside her to jostle Brody. “Wake up. Someone’s out there!” She scrambled to her feet and stood directly below the ventilation hole. Cupping her hands around her mouth, she yelled, “In here! Below ground level. In the cellar. Help!”

“Hey! Down here!” Brody added his booming baritone voice to hers.

Fumbling her phone from her pocket, she woke the screen and turned on the flashlight app. Would the tiny beam of illumination help the searchers find them? Unlikely, but she was willing to do anything that improved their chances even an iota.

In the glow of the flashlight app, she cast her gaze to Brody—rumpled, dried blood on his forehead, covered in dirt stains and the handsomest thing she’d seen since he’d first been brought to her emergency room. He gave her a smile that tripped giddily through her, making her body hum from head to foot.

Reaching for her with fingers callused from creating their ventilation hole twice, he brushed her cheek tenderly. “I told you we’d get out of here. And when we get back to town, I want you to meet my family.”

She pressed her hand over his, trapping his hand against her face. “Deal. I’d love to get to know them.” Arching an eyebrow, she added, “But can I shower first? My grime has grime, and I’m positively itchy with dried sweat.”

His groan was laced with longing. “Oh, yes. A shower! Long and hot with lots of soap. I can’t wait!”

She laughed, then tipped her head, waggling her eyebrows suggestively. “What if we shared a shower? I’d scrub your back, if you scrubbed mine.”

His eyes widened, blinked. He dropped his hand from her cheek. Brody opened his mouth as if to say something, then furrowed his forehead and mumbled, “Umm, Anya, I—uh...”

Humiliation and disappointment speared her, but she played off his reluctance, forcing a light note in her tone as she swatted at him. “Just kidding. Gosh, after spending a couple days in a dark cellar with a guy, you’d think they’d know when you were teasing.”

She was spared further discussion of her faux pas, when more voices called from above them. “Hello? Brody? Anya? Where are you?”

“Down here! Look for our ventilation hole,” Brody called back, framing his mouth with his hands.

Masking her heartache with a brave smile, Anya wondered about the relief on his face. Was it due to their imminent rescue or gratitude he was saved from continuing the awkward discussion of how he didn’t want to continue a sexual relationship with her now that they were leaving the pit?

Sure, they’d had sex last night, comforting each other and breaking their boredom with a pleasurable activity.
