TRAVIS WAS ENJOYING the single moment of quiet in the last six hours since visitors had arrived. Dinner had been a raucous and fun affair. The roast beef, fresh biscuits, veggies and peach cobbler had been a huge hit. His sister and brother-in-law couldn’t stop gushing about the fresh-made goodies, versus the last couple of years of take-out ready-to-heat fare and whatever they had been able to scrape together at the last minute. He finished checking his email on the laptop balanced on his knee, looking up briefly when he heard footsteps on the stairs. He grinned when his sister bounded down and snuggled into the couch next to him.

“What’cha doing?”

“Just checking emails and finishing a couple items for the store.”

“How’s business?”

“Great! Special orders and general sales are all up over 12% this year over last year at the same time. Add to that the income from the sale of the houses I flipped. Life is good. Money is not my concern anymore.”

“Are you going to sell this one?” Jenna asked, looking around. “You let her unpack the boxes. All the boxes, if I’m not mistaken.”

He sighed and followed her gaze. The house definitely looked homier than he had become accustomed to in the last couple of years. He lived in the houses he was fixing up, as a cost savings measure. Until now, he hadn’t unpacked anything but the necessities in the last couple of places he lived.

“Yes, I did. She needs to stay busy, so it was the prudent thing to do. And ... I don’t know if I’m going to sell it.”

He meant it. If Emily and the kids left after Christmas, there was no reason to keep it. It would feel too empty. The thought came unbidden to his mind.

“So at least until school gets out, you will be here. That will be the longest in four years at a single address.”

He looked down at where her head nestled on his chest.

“Why until school gets out?”

“With Emily ... staying here ... you aren’t expecting to move them in between, are you? Kind of defeats the purpose of stability ...”

She stopped and was staring at him. He realized the shock must be showing.

“She didn’t tell you?”

He shook his head. “I asked tonight in the kitchen, but she never gave me a final answer.”

“Are you okay with it?”

“I wouldn’t have asked if I wasn’t,” he said gruffly.

“Travis, she’s never had a decent home or family. When I met her, she was so ... broken. I just ... If you aren’t interested in her, you need to make that abundantly clear because whether she knows it or not, she’s already half in love with you.”

He averted his eyes, not wanting his too perceptive sister to read what was in them. It was so soon, and time would tell if there was anything there, but he had to admit that he wasn’t upset at that announcement. In fact a lot of other feelings were coursing through him, and none were of the negative variety.
