Yiayia looked at the list. ‘Ama! One hundred word! Is a lot. But you is clever, Calista mou. I know you is to be brilliant. So how much I give to you?’ she said, already reaching for her purse from the handbag she always wears these days, even inside the house. I think it’s because she’s started losing things a bit recently, and so she likes to keep things like her keys and her money on her.

Yiayia’s too cute. My lovely, kind, Yiayia.

‘Oh, no, it’s OK, Yiayia. You don’t have to pay anything yet. We have to learn them first. And then do the test...’

‘But I know you is to be getting them right, Calista mou,’ said Yiayia.

‘Aww thanks, Yiayia. Tell you what, you can be the first person on my sponsor form,’ I said, writing ‘Yiayia’ down at the top of the list.

Yiayia was still looking at the spellings. ‘So this is to be why Jimmy is no happy,’ she said. ‘Is too much word for Jimmy. Is too long word for Jimmy,’ she continued looking at the list shaking her head. Then her eyes brightened and she smiled, ‘You know, is to be many Greek word on this list? Arachnophobia. Arachni is means spider in Greek. Phobia is means to be scared.’

I shivered. I hate spiders.

Yiayia continued, ‘ Monochrome. Mono is mean only one. Chroma is mean colour. Polygon. Poli is mean many. Shape has many side. And you see? Number of side shape has, all Greek too. Pentagon. Pente is mean five in Greek. Hexagon. Exi is mean six in Greek. Heptagon. Epta is mean seven in Greek. Octagon. Octo is mean eight in Greek... ’

‘Yeah, thanks, Yiayia. I’m going to VideoTime Aisha now and practise,’ I said, taking the paper back.

‘Is everything Greek!’ said Yiayia proudly, as she cleared away the tea things and I headed upstairs to call Aisha.

When Mum got home from work, she came up to see us as we were in our rooms. Me, memorising the spellings and Jimmy still gaming, most probably. Mum popped her head around my door and saw me scribbling away.

‘Good girl, Cally. Getting on with your homework, I see?’ She came in and gave me a kiss on my head, but she could tell I didn’t want to be interrupted so she went off to check on Jimmy. I was determined to get those spellings learnt. The truth is, the VideoTime call hadn’t gone that well with Aisha, cos, although we’re best friends and everything, I think we secretly were each wanting to be the one who did the best. So it all got a bit intense. We agreed that it might be better to just teach ourselves and see how things turned out on the day.

I could hear Mum and Jimmy chatting next door. Jimmy sounded more sad than angry now. So I put the spelling list down and went to see what was what. Jimmy wasn’t in his gaming chair at all. He was sitting up on his bed with tears running down his face.
