I looked over the design again, positive that I had included everything of importance. This was going to be the biggest break of my career, and I had to see it through. The city council meeting was about a week away, and as far as I knew things were on track. I knew that Raven was distancing herself as she prepared, but I had to admit my mind kept wandering to her. I kept thinking about how it felt to jump into that lake with her and hold her in my arms for even a moment.

I needed to convince Grandma to give us a reason to parade around as a couple again. I doubted if I asked her out straight up she’d say yes. She was setting some strong boundaries during that mini photo shoot; she had barely made eye contact with me, and she left abruptly with Skyla. The only two times I knew I would see her again were the city council meeting and the wedding. I tried my best to refocus, I was halfway through the meeting with Mr. Archer, when Damien burst in.

“I’m not sure what your little girlfriend is cooking up but we just had the fifteenth tenant reject the relocation package. This project is about to be DOA.”

“So a few people haven’t signed on for the relocation. We don’t need public funds to push the project through, that’s what our company’s private sponsors are for.” I manage to keep my cool, straightening my tie.

“I don’t know if you’ve been paying attention but we don’t have a lot of private support.” Damien nearly whispers.

“What do you mean we are a million dollar company.”

“We were.”

“We have the Gators Basketball Team.” I attempt to inject some relief into the situation. I look towards Mr. Archer.

“You’re a promising architect, I haven’t given you project because we simply haven’t been contracted to do many. Your idea to bring the team out here is right on par but we can’t afford to offer these businesses more than a five thousand dollar relocation package. We also need public funds to pour into this stadium. We spent the money budgeted for this project on buying the LV Rentals.”

I look over at them both, now it makes sense why I was suddenly being able to take the lead on such an important project. This business was a dumpster fire and I was their shot in the dark.

“And you think Lake-view is carrying that kind of money?”

“We know they are even small cities easily clear millions a year. Besides, they’ll make it back easy. With the money we secure from building the stadium and rehabbing other LV Rentals around the city, we can save the firm.” Damien explains.

“We were hoping bringing on a local would help encourage people to go with the plans without complaint.”

“If you get at least eight of those businesses to support the move and accept the package, we can sway the vote and secure the money. You’re from here, your girlfriend is apart of that group, do what you need to.
