Chapter Twenty-Seven

Half the school year had passed, and the Master had heard nothing more from his spy. Although he prided himself on his patience, he needed more information to determine what his next move should be. News from other parts of the ocean troubled him. His enemy, Aquatica, had been spotted. No one had seen her in years. He foolishly hoped she had perished, but he knew in his heart that it wouldn’t be that easy to get rid of her. He couldn’t let her reconnect with Coral. He couldn’t let Aquatica get her hands on the talisman again.

He had hoped he could pry more information from Osiris on where Coral could be hiding the talisman, but the old fool had nothing more to give. Osiris hadn’t been around his daughter for most of her life and had no insight. The Master was tempted to go to the Academy himself and get the job done, but he knew that would be a mistake. He couldn’t afford to be careless, even with Aquatica’s resurgence. Like it or not, he had to rely on his minion to get the information he sought.

He kept the cowl of his cloak over his head and rested against the high-backed chair in his secret lair. He watched the light dance at the entrance to the cave, the water bending and warping the light as it moved. He picked this cave specifically because he could rest in darkness in a position of authority while his minions rested in the light. His reputation proceeded him, which allowed him to remain in anonymity. Both were powerful tools in his network of agents.

He had learned long ago that absolute control depended on fear and promises of power. He lured his agents in with promises of power and then demonstrated that power on the less worthy, obliterating them from existence. Hence, the power he wielded became both an instrument of fear and a lure. He had built his reputation on both, and that guaranteed a certain level of control. He relied on that control as he waited for his spy to arrive.

After what seemed like hours, another figure entered the cave and bent low in the entrance's light.

“Master.”

“What news do you have for me?”

“I am sorry, Master, but I do not have the location of the talisman yet.”

He did not tolerate failure, and annoyance built inside of him. As it did, electricity crackled in the surrounding water. “Half of the year is gone. You know what I will do to you if you fail me.”

The spy’s head stayed bowed in submission. “I do, Master. I did not mean to disappoint you.”

An arc of electricity lanced out from the Master’s hand and struck the spy in the side. The spy let out a muffled groan but otherwise did not complain.

“What have you been doing with your time?” the Master growled.

Head still bowed, the spy said, “I have been uniquely positioning myself, as you instructed, Master.”

“Explain,” he demanded.

“I’ve got Coral wound up so tight, that soon she will reveal her power, even if unwillingly.
