Chapter Nine

"I'm back, my beautiful Little Sparrow." I swagger into the bedroom clutching my bottle of vodka and two glasses I'd grabbed from the kitchen counter on my way past.

"Have a drink with me."

"I would but I'm still tied to the bed, Dima," she looks at me with her hair falling over her face. Her hands and feet tied to the four corners of the bed. I didn't want to have to keep her like this but I couldn't risk her running off. "Once you submit. Fully submit to me, I'll give you your wings back. You can come and go as you please, come back whenever I require. We're not at that stage yet, but we will be. I promise." I tell her and unlock the chains from her feet.

"I have nowhere to run to even if I wanted to. But, I don't want to. I'm happy here with you," she insists.

Are you fucking with me? Playing with my heart? Are you being genuine or telling me what you know I want to hear? I'm the expert here. I know a lie when I hear one. I played this game to get out of the crazy asylum. Tell them what they want to hear and be set free from your prison.

Fuck. Shit. Does that mean you see this as a fucking prison and me as your jailer?

Fuck. Saying it out loud gave me clarity. Mother found the cutting box beside the candy. She took the candy but not the cutting box. Fucking bitch. She probably wanted me dead. No— not probably, certainly. I'm sure she hoped I'd end myself so I'd no longer be a burden to her.

"Your tattoos are beautiful." She traces her fingers across my arm and circles each red bird as it escapes from the giant clock of time on my arm. "Each beautiful moment escapes us if we let it. The scars buried beneath remind me of the darkest time but the birds fly over them and through them. Taking away my pain and reminding me that they were only ever moments in time. Time I won't get back, but time I'd never want back either."

"I understand. I have scars too."

"I saw them. They don't take away from your beauty."

"Why didn't you ask me about them?"

"I already know the answer. The scars on your inner thighs are the work of The Man. The Man you claim not to remember." Her short skirt allows me to touch her inner thighs and lean down and kiss the scars gently.

She inhales deeply, slowly, and exhales as I look up at her. Her breath hitting my face and sending a cool chill down my spine.

"Tell me, tell me you remember," I say and kiss her thighs again.

"I do," she finally confesses.

I kiss her scars once more before looking up at her tear filled eyes.

"I didn't mean to upset you. I needed to know that you remember it too. That I'm not insane. That it happened. That it was real."
