RECOGNITION < 1.25 in. Large for a blue. Cool, dark to violet-blue above with a dark brown, nebulous border on males, broader and darker on females with blue near the base and variable rusty edges. Tannish gray below, crossed by prominent arcing bands of white-ringed black dots. Inside black-checked white fringe runs a band of gray, and inside that a row of orange-faced, black chevrons topped with a row of sharp white arrowheads, pointing toward one outstanding, isolated white arrowhead on the disc. VARIATION Regional differences are subtle and inconsistent. Those from N CA into the Siskiyous and S OR Cascades are paler than Arrowheads occupying SE BC, E WA, and E OR to the mid-Cascades, which average larger, darker blue above with broader margins, and grayer beneath, but not as dark as the Rocky Mtn ssp. to the E. The amount of orangey brown on the females is highly variable. HOST PLANTS Lupinus arbustus, L. sericeus, L. wyethii, and prob. other lupines. Drinks from stonecrop, Canada thistle, other composites, mustards, mints, reeds, and mud. ON THE WING E April to L August, peak in May. A single generation, pupae overwinter. HABITAT AND RANGE Large lupine patches in desert, sage-steppe, ponderosa pine forest, canyons, dry gulches, wet meadows, and various montane situations, from basin level to high mountaintops. All the W states and provinces, S Canada to Baja. In Cascadia, E OR and E WA (W of the crest only at Mt. Rainier NP and Mt. St. Helens NVM), E Cascades to E Siskiyous, ID, and SE BC.
