There are lots of ways to make bows so that they are powerful and accurate; experiment, see what you prefer and teach your friends.

CATAPULT

As long you have permission from the landowner to shoot over land, then hunting ‘pest species’ with a catapult is perfectly legal; you’ll need to be absolutely sure that you know, understand and abide by the law and game legislation (www.gov.uk/hunting/overview).

Made famous by classic comics like The Beano, a catapult should be owned by anyone who spends time outdoors.

Catapults are easy to make and lots of fun to use, provided they are used responsibly. All you need is a robust forked stick, some decent elastic and some targets. Tin cans are great to start with but once everyone has had a chance to practise, paper targets may well be needed for accurate scoring. Homemade catapults can be very accurate.

Catapults are great for taking on woodland walks or day trips to the woods in the hope of killing your dinner; they are compact enough to carry in a pocket with some ready ammunition and are more than up to the task of taking down rabbits, pigeons or squirrels.

If you are hunting anything for food you must be very confident that you can achieve a quick, clean, humane kill with the weapon you are using.

Catapults don’t have a very large effective range; for hunting purposes they should only really be used at a maximum range of about 15 metres. Catapults use heavy ammunition which packs a lot of punch. At close ranges and used by someone that has practised enough to know they are accurate a catapult is an effective and humane weapon for taking small game and pest species.

Catapults are perfect as a first project for young people to make in the woods. Children can, with supervision and guidance, create something that will last them for ages.
