CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

LIKE THE EXTRA CHANNELS

Gary shakes the bag. ‘We found this at the cottage. Man, that place was a dump.’

I hold out my hand. ‘Is it my phone?’

He holds onto the bag. ‘It was on a table outside, kind of just left there for us to find. Or for you to find. Tell me, do you think your uncle expected you to go back to the cottage?’

‘I wouldn’t think so. Honestly, he probably just dumped it. Or forgot about it. Wait, why do we have a problem?’

Gary drops the bag in my hand. ‘Can you get it out of Lost Mode?’

‘Sure. Can I take it out of the bag?’

‘We’ve lifted some prints, charged the phone. We’re breaking all sorts of preservation protocols, but there’s an urgency to this.’

‘What do you mean?’

‘Can you just… Can you unlock the phone? Our IT guys aren’t down yet.’

I remove my phone from the bag. ‘Did you bring the iPad?’ I ask Lucy.

She grimaces. ‘Sorry, I think I only brought my laptop.’

‘Should be okay.’

I press the phone’s Home button and go through the steps to unlock it. Since I know the password, I don’t need a secondary device. We wait for a while for the signal to return. When it does, the mobile pings for a good ten seconds.

‘Wow,’ Lucy exclaims.

‘I hope that’s not work calling,’ I joke.

Gary’s face is quite serious. ‘I need you to check for messages or calls from Leonie Haynes.’

‘Why?’ A heaviness ripples through my body. I know the answer, the problem Gary’s alluding to. ‘I asked you to watch over her!’

Gary holds out his hands, urging me to calm down. ‘I made a call to our pals in Busselton. Two officers went to check up on her. She was supposed to be volunteering today, but she never clocked on.’

‘Fuck!’

‘I’m so sorry. I need to know if she contacted you.’

I open my messages. It’s right there, a string of texts from an unknown number.
