ust after a skimpy morning meal, one of the female guards pulled Chesa aside and escorted her to a meeting with Pha Pat. She found herself in a dimly lit room where rattan ceiling fans whirled overhead barely moving the muggy air. An array of electronics on a long mahogany table—a couple of laptops and three or four mobile phones—made her think it was some sort of KNP command center.

Seated at the table were Pha Pat and an older man in native dress. Miyat Win? The man she’d seen talking to Endra. Pha Pat motioned for Chesa to take one of the chairs on the opposite side of the table. As she sat, she noticed one-eyed Pak standing in a dark corner with a rifle strapped across his chest. He was the only one not smiling.

“We have very good news.” Pha Pat pointed at one of the cell phones on the table. “Your husband’s representative will arrive today.” He checked a gold watch on his left wrist. “In a few hours I should think.”

“And then this will be over?” Chesa waved a hand around the room. “You will let us go?”

“Much depends on your husband's representative.” Pha Pat sounded like a schoolteacher lecturing backward students. “If your husband has met our demands and there is no nonsense, you will be free to return with him to the border. If not…” Pha Pat cut a glance at one-eyed Pak. “Well, we are prepared to exercise our options.”

“There is one issue…” Miyat Win leaned forward with his elbows on the table. “Your sister Endra…”

“What about her?”

“We have been talking. She understands our struggle. Much better than you do, I think. It is possible that your sister may wish to stay behind, to stay with us and help our cause.”

“No!” Chesa jumped to her feet. “She is just a child. She has no idea what she wants. I’m her older sister, she will do as I say. Endra will return with me to Thailand!”

“Despite what you think…” Miyat Win used a finger to shove his spectacles higher on his nose. “We are not criminals. We are forced by circumstances in this country to sometimes take harsh measures. But we respect each person’s right to choose a path in this life. We will not force your sister to stay with us. On the other hand, if Endra chooses to stay, we will not force her to leave.”

“I will speak to her. Endra will leave with me.”

Miyat Win shrugged and sat back in chair. “We will see what path your sister chooses when the time comes.”

“In the meantime,” Pha Pat picked up one of the phones that was vibrating on the table. “You must prepare yourself for a journey if that path is open to you and your sister.”

He waved a hand. Meeting concluded. One of the female guards stepped up to lead her from the room. She saw one-eyed Pak step forward and bend close to Pha Pat for whispered instructions.

Endra was flirting shamelessly with a young man in the hallway outside their room when Chesa arrived from her meeting.
