AARON

Eleven o’clock on Saturday morning, and seven of us were en route to Blue’s red dot. We’d all pored over the satellite pictures yesterday evening, and while none of us could say definitively that the dot was a car, we couldn’t be sure it wasn’t either.

And Colt and Luca agreed we had to check.

We’d tried to leave Romi and Blue behind, and Blue said no problem, she’d just drive there herself, which promised to create more problems than it solved. So Romi and Blue were being chauffeured by Luca, and I was shotgun in Colt’s truck. Brooke was at work, thank fuck. She’d begged us to wait until tomorrow so she could come too, which was why Luca and I had decided we absolutely had to go today.

Brie had also wanted to join us, but Colt said no, her security team said no, and somebody threatened to call her mother, so she was sulking at the Peninsula with Kiki and we’d brought Kasper, one of her bodyguards, as a concession. Couldn’t say I was upset about that—before he joined the Valetian Royal Guard, he’d been in the Danish special forces, and he knew more than any of us except Luca about war. And with the Bad Samaritan lurking in the shadows, it felt as if we were stepping into a combat zone.

Deck had also come along for the ride. Colt thought the extra muscle might be advantageous, and Deck had shown up with a machete. A fucking machete. Said it would come in useful if we had to cut through any undergrowth, and I only hoped he knew what he was doing. Today would be enough of a challenge without a visit to the emergency room.

At least this morning, we’d be able to drive right to the cabin instead of taking the Bad Samaritan’s trail through the forest. That cut the risk down to a tolerable level. A quick recon of the area beyond the clearing to check whether there was indeed a car lurking in the undergrowth, a prayer beside the cabin where Romi wanted to lay a bunch of flowers, and we’d be home in time for a late lunch.

That was the plan, anyway.

A plan I soon realised was up shit creek, quite literally, when Deck and Luca—who it turned out had his own machete—hacked their way through a clump of buckthorn and found…a large pond. Or possibly a small lake. Either way, it was a heck of a lot of water, and it was right where the coordinates said Blue’s red dot should be.

“Aw, hell,” Luca groaned.

“What? What is it?”

Romi stumbled forward from behind and would have landed on her face if I hadn’t grabbed her arm. She might have been elegance personified on the runway, but sure-footed she was not. We used to hike in the hills around Baldwin’s Shore when we were teenagers—me and Romi, Luca, Brooke, occasionally Addy and Colt—and if someone was going to trip over, it was invariably her. She’d once confessed
