ELEVEN

Jordyn sipped her coffee as she stared out the window at her parents’ cottage residence two and a half weeks later. She had finished her documentation in record time, and now Dr. Chambers, with the help of a group of medical examiners, would carefully review everything to determine how each victim had died. She had sent her findings in stages, hoping it would speed up the ME’s process.

Hurricane Jezebel had finally passed through their region, damaging most of the Charock Harbour community. Cleanup crews worked around the clock to clear the area and make repairs. She hadn’t minded, as it allowed her to give her team time off. Meanwhile, she had set up a makeshift office in the cottage’s dining room.

Unfortunately, there had been no further word on Morgan’s whereabouts. Even though Jordyn hadn’t recently spoken much to her sister, she longed to hear Morgan’s voice. She had to share the fact that she’d forgiven her and wanted back in her life. Not that Jordyn expected an instant reconnection, but it would be a start.

She scanned the horizon for some hope of a break in the dreary sky. It was late afternoon, but dusk had once again descended. Even though the storm had passed, the sun refused to shine.

“Morgie, where are you?” Jordyn failed to even consider what Ursula Baine had speculated on the news—that Morgan had probably been killed and the police hadn’t found her remains. Jordyn pursed her lips. “That’s not true. It can’t be.” A tear escaped, and she wiped it away.

Woof!

Jordyn squatted in front of the German shepherd and checked behind her to ensure Colt was nowhere in sight. Bones was working, but she wanted to show him how much she enjoyed being around her canine friend. Assured of his partner’s absence, she kissed the dog’s face.

He licked hers in response.

She rubbed behind his ears. “It will be our little secret, okay, bud?”

He barked.

“What secret?” Colt asked, skulking up behind her.

She jumped. “Nothing. What’s going on?”

“Just got word Ursula will be giving another report shortly.” Colt pointed at Bones. “Why does my dog have lipstick on his head?”

Busted.

“No idea. Let’s go watch our favorite reporter.” She spun on her heels and hustled into the living room, suppressing her laughter over her and Bones’s secret.

Jordyn picked up the remote and sunk into a chair.

“It’s gonna be okay.” Colt placed a hand on her shoulder.

She startled. “Is it? We can’t outrun the BoneDigger or find my sister.”

“I’ve been praying. God’s got this.” Colt paused. “Sorry, it’s not what you wanted to hear. I hate when people give me pat answers, and I just did the very thing I despise.”

The familiar tones of breaking-news music blared on the news station, stalling their conversation. Ursula appeared on the screen, sitting beside the station’s news anchor.

“We interrupt your regular programming to give you an update on the BoneDigger case.” The man tapped his papers on the surface and turned to Ursula. “Tell us what you’ve uncovered.”

She smiled into the camera. “Channel 5 News has discovered that police found lynx carvings in all the BoneDigger’s graves.
