Chapter 20

“ADRIANNA, HEY,” MASON yelled after me in the school hallway, and I turned around, wondering what he wanted to say to me.

As he approached me, he looked like a puppy dog that had been kicked, or at least, he tried to look that way.

I waved at Elijah and Corey, who immediately stepped away from me. When I was with Mason, they were supposed to give me some privacy anyway, so I was going to use that. Maybe then people would talk less about me being in love with my cousins.

“Um, I’m really sorry about yesterday,” Mason said, giving me a sad look. “I don’t know what came over me. That’s not who I am and who I want to be. Do you think you could give me a second chance? I really like you and I don’t want to screw this up. I was pissed off because Dinarti got on the team. I know there’s no excuse.”

Okay, so now we were at that point of our “relationship” where he swore he wouldn’t do it again, except I could see it in his eyes that he was just saying it because he thought it would get him what he wanted.

He didn’t believe a word he said.

It was impressive, actually.

But if almost every movie and TV show I’d seen about people like him was right, then of course he’d lose control again, hurt me, and then apologize.

Rinse.

Repeat.

The main difference was that I was seeing right through his act, and I supposed the only reason why I could do it was because I didn’t like him in any shape or form.

I didn’t find him attractive and I’d never even liked him. There was no way he could fool me.

No way for him to make me believe his lies, because the last thing I wanted to do was to believe them.

Okay, maybe I was jumping to conclusions, but Mason had already snapped at me in that club, and then at the game. It wasn’t a coincidence.

Not that it mattered since I was never going to fall in love with him. But maybe I needed to go back to my plan to use Mason to find out what was really going.

I needed to do something to regain my parents’ trust and show them that I always had my family’s best interest at heart, and Mason might be the key to it.

“Please,” Mason said, and his face contorted a bit as if saying the word physically hurt him.

It was kind of entertaining, to be honest.

“All right,” I finally said, and his lips spread into a wide smile. “I’m hungry. Why don’t you come with me to the cafeteria, and we can grab something to eat and talk?”

“Yeah, sure.” He was happy to follow me to the cafeteria.

After we got ourselves some food, we found an empty table.

I took a seat next to Mason, and as I glanced over my shoulder, I noticed Caden watching us from the doorway.

Mason’s back was turned to him so he couldn’t see Caden, and I was glad about it.
