Six Questions to Ask During Home Visits

It can be overwhelming to think of questions to ask families that are both meaningful and unobtrusive. Here is a list of questions from “Lessons at the Kitchen Table” that will provide rich conversations, as well as a template for common procedure for staff. You will notice there are two bullet points with room for questions that you may add.

• What are you most proud of about your son or daughter (granddaughter, niece, sister, etc.)?

• When your child talks about school, what are some of the things they have mentioned?

• In the past, what things at school have made them feel included?

• What gives your family strength?

• What do you think would be particularly important or interesting for them to learn?

• Are there ways in which you, as a parent or caregiver, would like to participate/volunteer at school?
