Chapter 7: Water
Water in 3 Canteens – 1 Quart (or Liter) minimum per day
This water is for drinking only. Each canteen should have either a belt clip or shoulder strap or both. The reason behind multiple canteens is in case one or more break.
In a desert environment, or in areas where drought or lack of water is habitual and thus water hard to find, consider carrying up to 2 quarts.
Additionally, if you are caught in a situation that requires you to stay inside the shelter (enemy soldiers are about, wild animals, snowstorm, fallout etc.), an empty bottle can be used to collect urine, thus keeping you safe inside for the night.
Straw Filter for Water Purification
This is used to purify the water.
The result of drinking impure water generally starts as cramping and increases to diarrhea, which leads to dehydration, which leads to death.
This method allows you to drink straight from the stream, puddle or wherever you find water. Different straw filters have different ratings. Most list the amount in gallons or liters that one can filter and have a break-down of how much they filter. Use your best judgment, and get the one that makes the most sense to you according to your needs.
Crystalline Iodine for Water Purification
Sometimes you may not want to just drink from the stream. You may see something floating in it that makes you unsure about the water.
Consider this; do you know what may or may not have died and is now rotting in the same water a little further upstream?
If you suspect the water is contaminated with cholera, filter it and boil it for a minimum of 10 min. Water taken from stagnant pools should be boiled. However, most moving water is generally safe to drink as long as it is filtered.
One great all-in-one option is: Polar Pure - Pure Iodine Crystal Kit
This water treatment kit kills giardia, bacteria and viruses without the weight of bulky filters. The active ingredients include 99.5% crystalline iodine and 0.5% inert ingredients. The crystals are not affected by age, air or temperature.
The solution is effective as long as any iodine crystals are visible; and a particle trap prevents crystal loss and ingestion.
Use:
Fill the bottle with water and shake; the solution will be ready in one hour. Then pour the required amount of solution into a quart of water, and let stand 20 minutes.
One bottle treats up to 2,000 quarts of water.
Caution: Iodine does not kill cryptosporidium. Boiling water does. So if this is a concern, boil the water. 10 minutes of boiling will kill off any living organisms.
