Pair of Socks

A simple change of socks makes a world of difference when out in the wilderness. It will help relieve odor. It will help to keep you from getting athletes foot. Also, a second pair of socks is sometimes necessary to keep your feet from freezing. Try to get wool ones as they wick the moisture from your feet. Again, it depends on the situation.

The simplest method I have heard of, to keep your socks clean and ready to go, is to wash a pair of them every evening, wring them out well, then shake them, and hang them from your tent or in a nearby tree throughout the night. If you don’t shake them after wringing them, they end up stiff when you try to put them on.

One fellow I met told me that every time he chanced upon a stream he would use that opportunity to change his socks, and washed the ones he was wearing. Then he would safety pin them to his pack and wait for the next stream. Whatever works for you works.
