Chapter Five

Working as a bouncer at the Climax Bar wasn’t quite as easy as Rick thought it would be. Unlike his other brothers in blue, Rick had never doubled as a security officer. A lot of police officers did it for the extra money, but Rick had never wanted to spend his off time working when he could be hooking up. As he entered the third hour of six-hour shift, he remembered why he didn’t hang out in bars. Drunks annoyed him. It wasn’t just the slurred words or the waving around thing they did with their hands or even the fact that they talked loud enough to wake the dead. What really irritated him was how a good chunk of them seemed to be looking for a fight.

“You don’t scare me, buddy.” The man with breath like a shoe worn nonstop for over a year jabbed his finger into Rick’s chest. What was it with angry little men who did that to him? For the life of him, it felt like they were checking him for doneness. Or maybe poking him to decide if they wanted to buy him. Either way, it didn’t hurt, but it certainly didn’t feel good either.

“Chester, I’m gonna need you to settle down or out you go.” The bartender tried again to get Chester to leave Rick alone, but Chester had a hard-on for him.

“He started it!” Chester tried to poke Rick again but he also turned to address his comment to the bartender. Chester’s finger almost ended up in Rick’s mouth.

Rick dodged the flailing finger then checked on Quentin, who sat at the little table in the corner, watching and laughing. Rick was going to make sure he regretted that later. He’d tease him until he was in tears but he still wouldn’t let him climax. Oh, no. Rick would make the kid crazy before he let him get off. If Quentin hadn’t heard of orgasm denial, he was about to have a firsthand demonstration of the power of anticipation.

“Damn it, Chester. You’re not even supposed to be in here.” Another man, younger but with the same thick hair as Chester, entered the bar and took the old man away.

“That his son?” Rick asked.

“Yeah. Chester’s got anger management issues.”

Rick paid attention to that. He didn’t want to end up an angry old man like Chester.

“Need a break?” the bartender asked.

“Yeah.” Rick grabbed a bottle of water and settled at Quentin’s table. “Having fun?”

“I am, actually.” Quentin had been doing something on his phone while sipping water and eating onion rings. Rick snagged one, slathering it in thousand island dressing before popping it in his mouth. “Hey, get your own.” Quentin tried to slap his hand but missed.

“Yours taste better.”

“Oh, the things I could say to that.”

“But you won’t.”

“Not here.” Quentin darted his gaze around. “Seems to be quite a few homophobes in here tonight. Way more than there were before.”

“Liquor seems to bring that out in some men.” Rick leaned close. “The truth is they want another man but they’ll be damned to hell twice before they’ll ever admit it.
