Heather’s stomach screams at her for food, and she resents it for needing nourishment with everything going on. She wonders if Charlie is being fed wherever he is. She wonders if he is even alive to need food.

She blinks back a fresh set of tears and sits up straighter in the driver’s seat, sipping the black coffee she poured herself this morning in an attempt to erase the fog living in her head for the last two days.

The Bronswood car line is filling up.

All the same families are at drop off. Heather even made certain to arrive early enough to see Harriet, Liv, and Shay walking their children to class.

None of the missing families have returned.

Heather watches the last car pull away, and then she waits long enough to see Harriet, Liv, and Shay exit through the great wooden double doors together. They are talking rapidly with a lot of hand gestures. Shay leans in towards the other women, and they laugh. Heather hates them for laughing. How dare they be happy while she slips further into despair with every minute that Charlie isn’t with her.

Heather watches them from behind her oversized sunglasses, morbidly curious about what they’d say to her if she told them everything that she’s uncovered. Harriet looks up and spots her.

Harriet doesn’t say anything to the other two women. She stares right at Heather with sad eyes. Heather throws the car into gear and drives away.
