Chapter Five

Adam dropped off Tessa at the front of Royal Saints Prep. When he opened the door for her to exit, Tessa took a moment before leaving.

You can do this, she reminded herself. She got out and quickly fixed her oversized skirt. She didn’t look as nice in her school uniform as she remembered. She hoped a trip to the tailor this week would fix everything.

“Mr. Roseland mentioned that you should go directly to the principal’s office before classes start,” he reminded her. “Do you know where it is?” Tessa knew all too well where it was located. It was the last room she was in before leaving Royal Saints. It had been the principal who told her about the accident.

Tessa thanked him and watched him get back into his car. She looked at the large building in front of her. She admired the architecture of the school. The large arched roofs made it look like it was from a medieval time. Some of the kids even jokingly called it the castle when they were younger. Now it looked intimidating. It was a place girls like her should never be allowed back to. This was what she wanted she reminded herself.

She watched as other students walked inside the building as if it was no big deal. She wished she could put one foot in front of the other in that moment, but her feet felt glued to the sidewalk.

A boy bumped into her. He looked back at her with a disgusted look. “Sorry!” Tessa called out.

She finally managed to move her feet, and suddenly, her courage came back and she walked into the entrance. She remembered the beautiful white marble floors of the school but was still taken aback by it. A large copy of Rodin’s The Thinker was in the center of the massive hallway. Immaculate, large black lockers were on both sides. She made her way to the principal’s office.

She smiled when she saw the placard outside the administrative office with his name written on it. Mr. Hardknot. She remembered how tall he was. He had a gentle demeanor but a hard tone to his voice, which always made the students intimidated by him.

She walked inside the staff office. “Can I help you?” an admin staff member asked. Tessa let her know she had an appointment to meet with Mr. Hardknot and gave her name.

A moment later, Mr. Hardknot came out to greet her. “Ms. Meyers,” he said with a smile. He still had that hard tone to his voice. It was almost as if she were already in trouble but didn’t know why. “I’m very happy to see you here again.” Tessa thanked him. “Step into my office.”

Tessa walked into the large room. A picture of a general, his sword pointing to a battlefield where armored men fought, hung in the center of the room. “Please,” he said, gesturing at a chair, and Tessa sat. “I know things have been…tough. Your family lawyer, Mr. Roseland, has set everything up.
