Chapter Eleven
The first thing I teach myself after leaving Lucretia and shutting myself in my room is how to make my wings go away. I practice several times until the act is as easy as breathing. Paxton and Lucretia both said my fears would vanish when my wings returned. They werenât wrong. Iâm not afraid any longer, but Iâm not thrilled with them either.
I think about that as I check out my room and get ready for bed.
Surprisingly, sleep comes easily in this realm. In a way, the room reminds me of my room in the human realm. Thereâs a bed, chest of drawers, closet, table and chair for homework, lamps, and an area rug. Off my bedroom is an en suite bathroom, complete with all the necessary items, including makeup and hair care products.
Though all the furniture looks relatively normal, it feels slightly off. For instance, everything is black. Black bed frame. Black chest of drawers, bathroom sink, and toilet. Even the area rug partially under my bed is black. Fine. I get Iâm in the under kingdom. Seems like overkill, but whatever.
When I touch the items, I get a surprise. Because they all feel the same. For instance the bathroom sink. It looks porcelain and I expect it to be sleek and smooth. When I touch the bowl, it is smooth, but instead of cool and glass-like, it feels warm and rubbery⦠almost like itâs alive. Itâs slightly unnerving.
After handling necessities in the bathroom, I dress in my new uniform. A pleated skirt, white shirt with slits for my wings, though I donât bring them out, and a hot pink sweater. Iâm surprised by how normal my clothes are, like something a human kid would wear, aside from the slits in the backs of them for my wings. My socks are white, and I pull them up to my knees. The black boots, while they look normal, feel the same as my bedroom furniture. Rubber stretched thin.
When I finish doing up the last button on my sweater, someone knocks on the door. âComing.â I glance over at the desk wondering again why there arenât any books or paper or writing utensils, or something. Shrugging, I open the door.
The girl in front of me is obviously a student. Sheâs dressed the same as me, except for her sweater. Itâs purple and she has orange wings, though not just any orange, but sunrise, amber, and ginger. Sheâs taller than me, with brown skin, black hair and candlelight yellow eyes. âReady, your highness?â she asks, looking me over and sniffing.
âYep.â I close my door. âBut itâs just Rory.â
âSure, whatever, Rory.â She says my name like itâs a bad word.
I sigh internally. âWhatâs your name?â
âSamantha.â She takes off like thereâs a fire and she needs to get away from it. Actually, itâs me she doesnât want to be near, but I jog to catch up.
âDo you go by Sam?â I ask lightly, hoping if I show her how nice I am, sheâll warm up.
