13. Feral Pigeon
The Feral, or Town, Pigeon is A direct descendant of the Rock Dove, itself now quite a rare coastal resident in its pure form. The fertal cousin is ubiquitous in Britainâs towns and cities, where it displays a bewildering variation in plumage as a result of long interbreeding with other species.
Living to an age of up to 35 years in captivity (although more usually around 15) the Town Pigeon often survives only 5 in the harsh urban environment. It has adapted well to a diet of discarded human food, perhaps because it has only 37 taste buds, compared to human beingsâ 10,000!
