Chapter Eighteen

Kieran sent a letter to Mr. O’Brien in Galway. He requested four more maids to replace the two who fled after a nasty encounter in the night. He asked for four maids, not two, so Aine didn’t have to work so hard. He asked O’Brien to send Aine’s daughter and her family to him, as he had promised a job to her husband. They could live in the house set aside for the steward near the estate as Rose had her own home and didn’t need the sizeable cottage. That way, Aine’s grandchildren would not be near the elemental.

He briefly explained the attack on him by Ian O’Flaherty and his men, and asked O’Brien to quickly hire a retinue of capable men to guard the castle and ensure his safety and that of his younger brother. Kieran wanted men with former military training, if possible, men able to fight armed thugs. Using his connection as Lord Wentworth’s heir, he promised to pay them all top wages to inspire loyalty, intimating to O’Brien that he had very deep pockets.

It galled Kieran to realize it all kept coming back to his grandfather.

He was running away from his grandparent and at the same time he was forced to rely on his relationship to the earl to accomplish the tasks before him. Kieran came here with noble ideas about starting a new life, of being dependent upon none but himself. He’d been a reckless fool. He had no social currency here with his father’s people. He was just a stranger who bore the name O’Flaherty.

Grandfather’s wedding gift to him was a strong dose of reality. A cold, stone fortress of reality. His grandfather gifted him with a monument to an idyllic existence that could never be recaptured. In the days that followed, as Kieran waited for his new staff to arrive, he mourned the loss of that dream he’d cherished for most of his life--the dream of coming home. He was lonely here, and he was starting to miss some of the conveniences and delights of London. Perhaps that blow to the head had broken the enchantment that Ireland had had on him all these years.

O’Brien wrote back assuring him his wishes would be carried out immediately. The new staff for the castle, including guards, would arrive before the week was out, in fact, as soon as O’Brien could hire them. In the mean time, Kieran asked Michael not to leave the castle grounds without an escort from the footmen. He didn’t want his brother to be harmed if he encountered the same men who attacked Kieran.

He also sent for the constable in the village of Ballykinnon. When the man arrived, Kieran demanded the arrest of Ian O’Flaherty for assaulting him. He was the ruling lord, living but five miles from the village and owned the land the town sat on according to the law. Constable Dolan was quick to carry out Kieran’s orders and was most respectful toward him. The constable, along with several men of the town went with Kieran to Ian O’Flaherty’s cottage.
