He smiles, his head ringing again with the gun sounds they made with their mouths. From there the three of them would run and hide on a hill behind the neighborhood and the kids playing the police would chase them: the game could go on for hours until they were finally captured.

The robbery of the provincial bank had happened exactly like that. Playing at robbing the bank was the craze that whole year, and everyone wanted to be the shit-hot thief who could shoot two guns at the same time.

It all seems so far away now.

The first time he picked up a real gun, he realized how heavy they were and remembered the bank robber, and all his boyish admiration came back, because you’d need some serious skills even to hold a gun in each hand, up in the air, let alone to hit your mark.

He was never really into guns. He’d always preferred knives, light and precise. If one day he had to kill someone, he wanted it to be hand to hand.

A knife is almost like a continuation of your arm: you’d feel the other man’s life slipping out through the wound, the enemy blood gushing up to the handle and wetting your clenched fist.

Now he knows. Now he knows what it’s like on both sides: stabbing and being stabbed.
