Chapter Twenty-Six

Tallahassee Federal Detention Facility

0725 Local Time

His eyes were still puffy and burning, but the blurry vision had finally started to subside. After subduing him, they had taken him to the infirmary along with several other inmates to get treatment. Spectre, however, was the first to be removed.

He had thought he was going back to solitary as punishment, but instead they took him right back to the interview room where he expected the mysterious man from the night prior to enter at any moment. As he sat shackled to the chair, he daydreamed of Decker walking in, kissing him, and telling him it was all over instead. But Spectre knew it couldn’t be that easy. In fact, he had resigned himself to the idea that he would die in prison.

After what seemed like an eternity of waiting, suddenly the door flew open. Spectre looked over his shoulder to see the same man dressed in a suit and tie enter. This time he was carrying a smart tablet of some sort instead of a briefcase. Spectre turned back to face forward as the man walked in and took his seat across from him.

“I must say, I didn’t expect to be seeing you so soon, Martin,” the man said. “You’re already making friends and influencing people in there.”

“What can I say? I’m a people person,” Spectre replied with a sly grin.

“We’ll see about that,” the man replied coolly. “It’s no matter, though. Your timing is excellent. I wanted you to see this.”

The man opened the protective cover of the tablet and swiped the screen to unlock it. He flipped it around on the table so that Spectre could see the black and white video feed. It appeared to be aerial footage of a sedan traveling down a gravel road.

“What’s this?” Spectre asked as he studied the screen.

“UAV footage,” the man said. “As in an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle – a surveillance drone.”

“I know what a UAV is,” Spectre said as he watched the sedan turn off a dirt road and into an open field.

The man smiled. “That’s right. Hot shit fighter pilot, I forgot.”

“I think you mean shit hot,” Spectre quipped.

“You were shot down on your last flight, weren’t you?” the man asked with a raised eyebrow.

“Who is this?” Spectre asked, ignoring the jab as he watched the video. The sedan stopped in the field. Two people exited the front and then pulled a third out of the sedan. The image zoomed in. Spectre could tell it was a female and two males.

“That’s your girlfriend,” the man said. “You see, Cal – if I may I call you Cal – anyway, technology has changed this job. Just five years ago, I would have had to deal with cumbersome phone calls or mailing body parts or other tedious ways of providing proof of life to someone stubborn like you. But now? Now I can show you the whole thing in real time.”

“If you hurt her—”

“You’re going to do what?” the man asked. “You’re in no position to do anything.
