Using intentions reaffirms your ability to create your experience. Though you are clearly influenced by your past, you do not have to be a victim of your past choices and habits. The present moment has magic in it, as it always gives you the opportunity to choose something new. That is why present-moment awareness is so central to your mindfulness training.

Practice

Pick a general intention—like truthfulness, kindness, or appreciation—that you would like to apply to your life. Take time to select one that feels right to you, something that aligns with the person you aspire to be.

Then choose a specific event this week at which to practice your intention. Explore how the intention affects your experience. Remember that this is a practice and that habits are strong. Accept that your habits may initially override your intention. This is expected. But with patient practice, even well-ingrained habits can be uprooted.
