Chapter Seventeen

Rudy

After talking myself hoarse–first to the cop, then to the lawyer–I spent some time observing. There were a lot of differences between getting arrested here and getting arrested back in Arizona, even apart from the fact that I was a juvenile back then.

For one thing, the city I was arrested in before was an actual city. Starline is a town, and a small one. It only has the one police department, which doubles as a jail.

The building itself is literally right next door to the courthouse, and even has a hallway which connects the two buildings. I guess that helps facilitate the whole bringing violent criminals to trial thing. The jail part of the building is at least three stories. I say “at least” because I know of one basement, but I don’t know if it goes down farther than that. Since the nearest actual prison is a six hour drive from here, I think there’s a pretty decent chance of extra sub basements.

I started the afternoon on the ground floor, in a sort of open holding area with a few other people who were sitting around in various states of sobriety and moodiness waiting for news on their specific case. I was the first to be moved to the second floor, where my clothes were exchanged for an orange jumpsuit and I was given my very own personal number. Kind of an oxymoron, right?

Anyway, up on the second floor, I was taken to a tiny little cell with a pair of uncomfortable looking beds. A very large man was reading a comic book on one of them. I sat on the other and tried to look simultaneously intimidating and invisible. I was not successful on either point.

“First time in grown-up jail, huh?” The guy asked.

His forearms were bigger around than my thighs and covered in faded blue tattoos. He had black, shoulder-length hair which might have looked more impressive if it hadn’t been retreating from his forehead. He had a scar down one side of his lower lip, and another on the opposite eyebrow.

“Yep,” I said.

He nodded without looking at me. “You proud of what you did to get in here?”

I cocked my head and frowned. Weird opening question. He glanced up from his book and saw my expression, then went back to his book with a grin.

“You gotta think like an artist,” he said. “If you’re gonna break the rules, you better be damn clear about why. So–why’re you here?”

I shrugged. “Got framed for some shit I didn’t do.”

He flipped a page and made a disgusted noise. “Bah. We’re all innocent in here, yadda yadda. So let’s say you did get framed. Why?”

I frowned at him. “How the hell should I know? I’m not the one framing me.”

“Nah, but you know who you pissed off,” he said. “Or who thinks you’re pussy enough to take it lying down, or who thinks you’re stupid enough to fight it and lose. One way or another you did some shit or presented yourself some way, somehow, that got you put on the inside.
