The man in the black mask ripped off Vikki Faircloth’s hood and pointed a pistol at the side of her head with enough force to push her head at a slight angle. Vikki stood in front of Ambassador Hartman just to his right. On the other side of the ambassador were the other two hostages abducted in Belgium.

“Remove their hoods,” the masked man commanded.

The others who stood behind the three hostages did as instructed.

Overhead, the blazing sun temporarily blinded all three as their eyes adjusted to the sudden burst of vibrant light, with their pupils automatically going from wide to narrow.

“We’ll need your biometric signatures and pass-phrases so we can enter this facility,” the man in the black mask said.

Three of them remained quiet while Ambassador Hartman protested. “We’re not giving you a damn thing.”

“Really?” the masked man asked.

“Yeah, really.” Mike remained stoic. “You’ll just have to kill us all.”

“Fair enough.” The masked man applied pressure to the Glock 21 SF trigger. With the barrel pressed firmly to Vikki’s temple the hollow point round traveled the length of the barrel at 890 feet per second. However, it only needed to travel inches before it struck the side of her head and expanded with a tremendous velocity. Flesh nor bone could hinder its momentum.

The deafening round cracked as blood, gray matter, and chucks of skull entwined with blond hair smacked against the side of Ambassador Hartman’s head, throwing his face to the side.

Vikki’s lifeless body dropped to the ground at Mike’s feet. His gaze involuntarily looked down to see her still open eyes wide in disbelief. Vikki’s cratered skull and a pool of blood spread on the ground at his feet.

Mike’s ears rang as if a hundred cymbals cracked near his ear in unison. He could still make out the masked man’s words. “One down. Should I shoot the next one?”

Even with his friend and fellow government employee blown away in front of him and part of her dripping down the side of his face, Mike’s resolve remained intact. He took a deep gasp of air as droplets of Vikki’s blood rolled from his lips into his mouth, giving a metallic taste. “Do it. You can’t enter the facility by killing us all, you bastard. Vikki’s murder will only harden my resolve. You can take my eyes and fingers, but I’ll never reveal my passcode.”

“Really?” The man, without provocation, removed his black mask, revealing a set of vibrant blue eyes, a chiseled jawline, and a full head of thick black hair. “We’ll see about that, Michael.”
