ALDEBURGH

After a four-hour drive he’d made largely on autopilot, Gabriel unlocked his front door and went straight to the drinks cabinet.

With a tumbler of brandy in hand, he slumped in an armchair and took a sip of the smooth spirit. Then a gulp. Then he emptied his glass and refilled it.

McDonnell had gone out of her way to antagonise him. All that mysterious bullshit about this ‘team’ she’d brought in. They were spooks, pure and simple. Probably MI6 but not necessarily. Was that her background? He resolved to find out, the first chance he got.

As he brooded, he checked his phone. He remembered it had buzzed a couple of times as he was eating up the miles on the A12 heading into Suffolk.

Notifications filled the screen. Seven missed calls and a single text from Uri Ziff. He opened the text.

Don passed away last night. He was in no pain. I am so sorry. We have all lost a good friend. Call me whenever you get this. Uri.
