Chapter 11

Declan

Fuck! I’d screwed up with Remi. I knew that from the moment I had stepped into the study, leaving my husband standing in the hall. I should open the door, show Sylas out, and follow Remi upstairs. That was the right thing to do. But something inside me revolted against that idea. Somehow Remi had seriously triggered me. When he had practically demanded that I choose him over one of my oldest and closest friends, I had seen a Byron trying to manipulate me. Trying to control who I invited into my own house and who I was friends with. Trying to be in charge of my life. Well, I refused to become Remi’s puppet. He had to learn, better sooner than later, that I wasn’t going to dance to his tune. Still, his dejected expression had gutted me. I should have handled things differently. But I couldn’t take my words back. At least not right now. And certainly not the part about what I would do to anyone who dared to touch him, because I had meant every syllable. Plus, showing my belly might give Remi the impression that he had won. And I couldn’t let a Byron win against me.

I tossed my phone on the table and dropped into the nearest chair. “Fuck!” I exclaimed.

“That was…interesting,” Sylas murmured.

“I need a drink,” I grumbled, scrubbing my hands over my face.

Sylas opened his bag. “Well, lucky for you I brought this.” He lifted the bottle of ouzo. “Do you have glasses?”

I lifted myself out of the chair with a loud groan and stalked to the small wet bar with built-in freezer set in the corner. It had been a wedding gift from Magnus. I grabbed two glasses and filled them with ice cubes.

“Your husband is fierce,” Sylas said as he poured us a drink.

Shaking my head, I slid back into my seat. “Normally he’s rather…demure in the presence of strangers.”

“Not when you’re concerned,” Sylas remarked, handing me the drink. “Cheers.” He lifted his glass and took a big gulp.

I followed suit. The liquor burned in my throat and I welcomed the warm sensation in my stomach.

“This is not how I wanted him to meet you,” I muttered. “I’m sorry.”

Sylas smiled and waved my concern away. “Don’t be ridiculous. I know I can be a bit much sometimes. Especially in the eyes of partners and spouses.” He placed his glass on the side table, stood and sauntered over to me.

Sylas was a beautiful man, and he had an amazing body. More importantly, we had always understood each other. Neither of us had wanted a long-term relationship. And the sex had been spectacular every time. Well, not the first few times. We’d been two horny teenagers desperate to get off. Even a clumsy blow job or hand job had felt good. But we had practiced a lot—not only with each other, but also with others—and we both had gotten better. Much better. Sex with Sylas had always been freeing since we’d been on the same wavelength every time.
