I think Brian paid everybody off. I watched from an upstairs window as the deputies let Shark go. He went to his Porsche, which was damaged in front, and right before he got in he looked up right at me, even though I was peeking very cautiously through the blinds in this completely dark room—there was no way he could’ve seen me. But somehow he knew I was there. It gave me this awful chill, the way you might feel if someone you hated was reading your mind.

Then, while the deputies watched him, he got in his car and roared away.
