Chapter 14

“Go back to your room. I’ll get any homework you have from the rest of your classes.” Hannah urged me in the direction of the dorms.

“Thanks.” I didn’t want to go to Literature and see Niall’s judging scowl. I couldn’t handle anyone else’s disappointment.

“Just try to relax.” She knew me better than to suggest sleeping. “I’ll bring you up some lunch in an hour.”

I tried to smile, but couldn’t muster the energy. She turned and headed in the opposite direction while I took twice as long as normal to get to the dorms.

I had my key out to unlock the door, but when I tested the handle, it was unlocked. I stepped inside and found Natasha working at her desk with her back to me. Her emerald headphones were on, so I knew she couldn’t hear me. I didn’t know how to let her know I was here without scaring her.

I slipped off my gray converse and crawled onto my bed.

She didn’t notice, so I considered that a win and closed my eyes.

Her pen stopped writing, and I turned my head to see her staring at me. “Why are you here?”

“Sick?” I tried.

She narrowed her eyes. “Then go to the health clinic. I don’t want whatever you have.”

I rolled my eyes. “I’m not actually sick. I’m just having a bad day.”

She studied my features as if she could see a fever or infection if she stared hard enough.

“I swear, I’m not sick. I haven’t been able to sleep, and I’ve been under a lot of stress.”

She arched a brow. “Why can’t you sleep?”

That wasn’t what I was expecting her to ask.

“I have nightmares. They’ve been getting worse, so I keep myself awake.”

“Um, you do realize that isn’t a very good plan. You’ll go insane.”

“I’m well aware.” Maybe that was why I was having so many breakdowns and the depression. Could it all be related to not sleeping?

“Why don’t you take something?”

“Mrs. Hedgings said she would teach me how this Saturday.”

“So you’re just going to go full-zombie until then?” She shook her head and went to her closet. She pulled out a basket and ran her finger down a row of glass bottles. She eyed me, shook her head, and moved on to the next one.

“Here. Fill the dropper about halfway, then put it under your tongue. Wait for thirty seconds before swallowing.” She handed me the amber bottle, and I held it up.

There wasn’t a label, and I couldn’t tell what color the liquid was, not that it could have helped me identify the contents. “What is it?”

“A simple sleeping potion.” She waved her hand. “Glorified melatonin. It only lasts a few hours. I use it when I’ve stayed up really late and need to cram in a few hours of sleep before class.”

“Will it be dreamless?”

She looked like she was already bored with this conversation. “I’ve never had one when I take it. You’ll just wake up in a few hours feeling nice and rested.”

It was worth a shot.
