Chapter 14
âGo back to your room. Iâll get any homework you have from the rest of your classes.â Hannah urged me in the direction of the dorms.
âThanks.â I didnât want to go to Literature and see Niallâs judging scowl. I couldnât handle anyone elseâs disappointment.
âJust try to relax.â She knew me better than to suggest sleeping. âIâll bring you up some lunch in an hour.â
I tried to smile, but couldnât muster the energy. She turned and headed in the opposite direction while I took twice as long as normal to get to the dorms.
I had my key out to unlock the door, but when I tested the handle, it was unlocked. I stepped inside and found Natasha working at her desk with her back to me. Her emerald headphones were on, so I knew she couldnât hear me. I didnât know how to let her know I was here without scaring her.
I slipped off my gray converse and crawled onto my bed.
She didnât notice, so I considered that a win and closed my eyes.
Her pen stopped writing, and I turned my head to see her staring at me. âWhy are you here?â
âSick?â I tried.
She narrowed her eyes. âThen go to the health clinic. I donât want whatever you have.â
I rolled my eyes. âIâm not actually sick. Iâm just having a bad day.â
She studied my features as if she could see a fever or infection if she stared hard enough.
âI swear, Iâm not sick. I havenât been able to sleep, and Iâve been under a lot of stress.â
She arched a brow. âWhy canât you sleep?â
That wasnât what I was expecting her to ask.
âI have nightmares. Theyâve been getting worse, so I keep myself awake.â
âUm, you do realize that isnât a very good plan. Youâll go insane.â
âIâm well aware.â Maybe that was why I was having so many breakdowns and the depression. Could it all be related to not sleeping?
âWhy donât you take something?â
âMrs. Hedgings said she would teach me how this Saturday.â
âSo youâre just going to go full-zombie until then?â She shook her head and went to her closet. She pulled out a basket and ran her finger down a row of glass bottles. She eyed me, shook her head, and moved on to the next one.
âHere. Fill the dropper about halfway, then put it under your tongue. Wait for thirty seconds before swallowing.â She handed me the amber bottle, and I held it up.
There wasnât a label, and I couldnât tell what color the liquid was, not that it could have helped me identify the contents. âWhat is it?â
âA simple sleeping potion.â She waved her hand. âGlorified melatonin. It only lasts a few hours. I use it when Iâve stayed up really late and need to cram in a few hours of sleep before class.â
âWill it be dreamless?â
She looked like she was already bored with this conversation. âIâve never had one when I take it. Youâll just wake up in a few hours feeling nice and rested.â
It was worth a shot.
