Chapter 24

Selina

My skull feels too small, shrinking to crush the brain it’s encasing, and my ribs tighten as well, as if all my bones have turned against me, attacking the organs they’re designed to protect.

Helplessly, I watch as Gray is led away, silver at his wrists and throat.

“Serves him right,” Colton says, drawing me out of my crushing fog. “Always knew he was a player, a cad—”

“A cad?” Rock shakes his head. “Haven’t heard that one for a few decades.”

Colton turns toward Rock. “What would you call someone who disrespects a woman like that? Disrespects Selina.”

Colton, Rock and Pike move toward me.

“Stop!” Azad’s commanding voice fills the room. “Do not try my patience. Any of you. There will be no further violations of the princess, my intended Mate.”

My stomach roils. I’d pushed down that particular threat, believing he’d just said it to be cruel when he burst into the jail cell.

“You don’t need to marry her,” Rock says to Azad. “You proved your point. We get it. You hold all the cards. You’ve got all the power, and we have none. The three of us promise we’ll never touch her again as long as you leave her alone. She doesn’t want to be your Mate.”

“You are right about one thing.” A cruel smile paints Azad’s lips. “None of you will ever touch her again. He snaps his fingers and a group of knights step forward, surrounding my men.

“Azad,” I bow my head slightly. “Can we speak? Alone?” I hate that he holds Gray’s life in his hands and that I have to beg to save it.

He nods. “Take those three from the room,” he tells the remaining knights and they escort, Pike, Colton and Rock out of the Council Chambers. Lachlan ushers Ana and Timur out of the room too, and they all glance back with concern in their eyes.

“Why did you have guards take them?” I ask Azad. “The Council dismissed their charges.”

“You asked for privacy.” Azad stands to the side of me, a smug look on his face.

I chew the inside of my cheek, wanting so badly to rush out of the room after my men. What if I never see them again? But I need to beg for Gray’s life and can’t be two places at once.

“Azad.” I try to disguise the hate in my voice. “Will you spare Gray’s life?”

He tips his head to the side as if considering my question. “As he is one of my knights, I would like nothing more than to show him mercy. But after hearing his testimony…” he shudders. “His treatment of you…” He bows his head. “Your Highness, I humbly apologize to you on behalf of my Order.”

“No need.”

“Oh, but there is need.” He shakes his head with fake contrition. “Grayson was under my command, and it was difficult to hear the extent of his crimes described in such vulgar detail. That you are willing to spare his life, reveals your soft heart. I, however, cannot tolerate knowing that a vampire, who used you so despicably, continues to live.
