CHAPTER 14

TYLER

The whole house is quiet when I get up. I stretch my arms overhead and take a deep breath, welcoming the soreness across my body. I wonder how Maria is feeling this morning after our all-night marathon.

Beyond the physical satisfaction, we’d stayed up chatting and that's a first for me. I've never wanted pillow talk after sex, in fact it irritates me so much I can’t wait to get up and leave after my trysts.

It feels even more crazy because I'm not actually dating Maria. But it's hard not to want her by my side these days. I also want to announce to the whole world that she’s my woman. In our talk last night, I opened up about my past with Reine and Miles. I’ve never trusted anyone enough to be that vulnerable with them. With Maria, it's so easy. It's exhilarating and fun. I love the feeling of giving her some control. It's different, and even though different often gives me anxiety, this hasn't.

I hurry down the hall to use the bathroom, and after taking a shower, I get dressed and go down to the kitchen. I flip on the light and get out the coffee. Minutes later, the scent of coffee fills the air, and I take a seat at the kitchen table, whistling while it brews.

Just as the coffee is done, Big Al walks into the kitchen.

"Morning, Tyler," he says with a smile.

"Morning, Al."

I move around the kitchen with a spring in my step. I feel lighter somehow, my spine straight, shoulders back, happier with myself than I’ve been in years.

"You're in a good mood," Al comments. "Did you make an unexpected deal or something?"

"Should I not be happy at my sister’s wedding?"

He frowns as he opens the cupboard and pulls out a travel mug. "Mind if I have a cup of coffee?"

"Help yourself."

He smiles at me as he fills his mug with coffee, then pours a cup for me.

I take it from him with a flourish. "Thanks. Do you know where the girls went?"

"Nope. Laura's still in bed."

I glance up from my coffee. "Really? Then why did Maria have to leave the bedr—"

Oh. Oh.

Al freezes, his eyes widening. “I noticed you two skipped last night. Was it a great night?”

Mom saves me from Big Al’s irrepressible teasing by choosing the perfect moment to make an entrance. She waltzes into the kitchen in her silk floral robe, and she doesn’t miss the look between me and Al.

"Morning," she says, a cheerful lilt to her voice.

"Good morning."

She eyes both of us, clearly wondering what the heck is going on. Neither of us seems inclined to offer any explanation which, when I think about it, is probably a good thing. I’m sure Mom assumes Maria and I are intimate, but she doesn’t need to know all the details.

“What are you two hiding from me?”

“Nothing,” I quickly call out.

My phone saves the day, dinging with a text and giving me an excuse to put my attention somewhere other than Mom’s question.
