“So now we go and—”

There was a knock on the door. Alec’s men knew better than to knock during a meeting. He refused the little voice inside his head suggesting a name for who was on the other side of the door.

Carissa strolled in with Gia and Mel at her heels. Carissa wore dark jeans, riding boots, a black wool jacket, and a look in her eyes that said she was ready for a fight.

Had she already realized the reason he’d left so early, careful not to wake her?

“Our connections spread all over my city,” she said to him before turning to the others in the room. “Good afternoon, everyone. I believe you have something that belongs to us.”

“Oh, yes!” Leo moved to his feet and, from his pocket, retrieved Mel’s knife, the one she’d left stuck in her attacker’s side. He handed it to Carissa. It was encrusted with the letters LS.

Carissa smiled at him like a teacher to a second-grader who’d just gave her an apple. “Thank you, Leo. Not only for this but for coming to help us last night.” She held his hand for a second. “But I was referring to the little rat who tried to kill Mel.”

Her gaze shifted to Alec, the pressure of it making him want to look away. “Possession is nine-tenths of the law. Or haven’t you heard that?” Only God knew why he felt the need to provoke her instead of outright saying no. But he couldn’t figure out if she was angry or not.

He got his answer in the flare in her eyes, the color flushing her cheeks.

Carissa pressed her index finger to her mouth and then pointed it at Alec. “Yes, I’ve heard it. But you know what I’ve also heard? In the alpha cat’s house, a beta shouldn’t try to command. Now, please hand him over so we can deal with him.”

She meant to provoke, and though the insinuation scratched at him, Alec wasn’t biting. “I take it you consider me the beta to your alpha. There are places with doors and beds where that could prove interesting.” He grinned at her. “As far as our little mouse goes, why should you get to deal with him? We caught him.”

She advanced two steps toward him. “I get to deal with him because I’m the one who landed in the hospital when he tried to take me and almost killed my best friend.”

Along with the memory, and with every ticking second, Alec fought the urge to beat his fist bloody against the little rat’s face. And he would. Soon. “Trust me, no one has forgotten that, Carissa.”

“Carissa, Alec’s right,” Leo chimed in. “I did catch him after all.”

“It doesn’t matter. The offense was against us,” Gia countered.

“If you’re worried we won’t be able to do him justice, don’t.” Mel flicked an errant lock of hair from her forehead, revealing the bandage there. “We may not have your reputation, but our methods, though relatively new, are quite effective.”

Alec didn’t miss the brief ghost of a smile on Carissa’s lips.
