Stephen lay in bed, his foot propped on a pile of pillows. He glanced at his phone. It was only seven-thirty. He wasn’t supposed to meet Zoe until ten o’clock, but he still didn’t see how that was going to happen. He hadn’t slept much, and despite the pills he had taken, pain had been a constant companion. During the night, it had been so bad, the only thing he could do to get any relief was to hobble around the small hotel room. For some reason, that helped take the edge off.

One thing was sure, there was no way he could talk with any of the business owners for a couple of days. Between lack of sleep, the pain, and the medication he was taking, who knew what he would end up saying? Nothing good, he bet.

He pulled out his phone and found Zoe’s number in his address book. His finger paused over her name. Before he was able to muster the courage to call her, though, his phone burst to life in his hand. His father’s name flashed across the screen. He never called when he was out of the country—or in the country, for that matter. What could he possibly want?

With trepidation, Stephen answered the call.

“Hello?”

“Stephen, glad I caught you. How are things coming along in Amor? Have you secured the properties yet?”

Straight to the point, as usual.

“Not quite yet. I ran into a hiccup with a business owner, but I’ll have them secured by the end of the week. I have the mayor’s full approval on everything. He’s even had his assistant take me around to help everything go more smoothly.”

“That’s unusually accommodating.”

“Yeah, this hasn’t been a routine job, that’s for sure.”

Stephen heard papers rustling in the background. “How many of the five properties do you have at the moment?”

Stephen squeezed his eyes shut and mumbled, “One.”

Silence filled the line until he could barely stand it anymore.

“I know you’re doing your best out there, son, but Fillmore is breathing down my neck right now. He knows that you are one of the best he’s got, and he wants you back for another job. You need to wrap things up there and get back, preferably in the next week.”

Stephen’s eyes shot open. “The next week?” he yelped. “That’s not enough time to get everything done. Once I’ve acquired the properties, there’s the permits and—”

“I know the process.” His father’s voice was tired, like just the conversation was taking everything out of him. “Acquire the properties and do what you can in the next week or two, then come back and do the rest over the phone and e-mail.”

“All while trying to do another job? I thought this was an important one—one that would get me a promotion if done right.”

“It is—but so is the other job he has in mind for you.”

Stephen rubbed his temples. Would it never stop?

“I’ll do what I can,” he finally said.

“That’s my boy.” His father sounded resigned, like he’d been the bearer of bad news—pushing Stephen to do something he didn’t want to do.
