The Bite

I wondered who’d burned him and what they’d done but I didn’t ask. I didn’t think he’d tell me. It felt too personal. “Will you take me back to Jenna’s?”

I had some serious thinking to do. I also needed to know what kind of risk I’d be taking going to Court of Sea. Callen and Sadira would know. I didn’t trust Falco to tell me the truth. He’d probably make it seem easier than it would be. But then again, if I brought it up to Callen, he might try to stop me from making a bargain. In fact, I knew he would. Not letting me face Elettra was proof of that. And what if Falco were the only way to get my memories back.

“I thought we could hang out at my place.”

For whatever reason, a cold sweat started all over my body. I glanced at the A/C. It was on low. Why am I chilly suddenly? It was hotter than Satan’s balls outside and it’s not as if the air was on full blast in here. I folded my arms as goosebumps erupted. “I think it best if I go back to Jenna’s.” I couldn’t think straight with him so close.

He made a U-turn and nodded. “Alright.”

My teeth chattered as I started shivering. How could I be so cold when my face felt hotter than fire. What the heck is wrong with me?

Falco’s hand brushed over the air. “Are you cold?”

“Yeah.” I rubbed my arms and my skin became hypersensitive. Even my clothes started to get scratchy and uncomfortable.

With a wary look, Falco drove into a gas station. “It’s not cold. Are you feeling ill?” He parked off to the side of the building.

I shrugged. I’d never been ill before.

With the back of his hand, he touched my cheek, then my forehead. “Shit, you’re burning up.” His eyes dropped to my arm and he grabbed it. “The bite.”

The wound that was red before was now swollen and leaked puss. “It’s infected. I need antibiotics. Take me...” I may not be a nurse but I’d been around the hospital long enough. I needed to go there. My tongue grew heavy and I lost track of what I was going to say. Wait, I had my magical phoenix. “Jett,” I mumbled. My head spun and pounded so much I couldn’t think.

Falco peeled out of the parking lot. My head tilted back and forth with each turn. My eyes were so heavy. I was so tired and cold but hot too. I rested my head against the doorframe.

“Allora, don’t go to sleep,” Falco commanded. “Stay awake. I’m getting help.”

I tried to nod but couldn’t. I was too tired.

“Allora.” His voice grew sharper. “Wake up!”

I wanted to listen but my eyes closed and I couldn’t open them again.
