“Be early, so I can frisk you.”

“Randall, you say all the things a girl wants to hear.” Rasey’s hormones burned hotter each time she heard his voice. But she’d started feeling something else too, something elusive, maybe profound. At the beginning, way back at the first pre-interview, she’d felt the animal magnetism. But there seemed to be more to it. She wasn’t sure exactly what it was, but she was considering letting it overtake her. As if she had a choice.

She set the landline handset on the desk, picked up her cell. She steadied it in front of herself, stuck out her tongue and clicked off a selfie, texting it immediately.

Moments later she heard the rumble of his laugh, the photo apparently hitting its mark. “Hey, a guy has to do his job. Despite the protests of the proletariat.”

“I’ll see you shortly.” Rasey chuckled as she disconnected.

The reason for Randall’s call was to arrange a last minute luncheon with Azarov. It was scheduled at a boutique spot that she enjoyed but seldom frequented. She glanced at the chrome metronome clock on the corner of her desk, saw she had an hour. A cab would have her there in ten minutes, tops, so she was good.

Maybe he had a cancellation, she thought, but why so urgent? Whatever the reason, she took it as good news, a terrific opportunity. She’d be wise to bone up on her pitch, so she hit the intercom button for Clara, asked for the file, and put Randall out of her mind.
