CHAPTER EIGHT
January First, Midday
Bobby scanned the room. There was a woven cover on a queen-sized bed. The bedspreadâs weave depicted scenes of Chinese temples and gardens; it was sturdy but at the same time delicate, stunning. Bobby knew Keith had good taste from when they planned the wedding together. Some of his motherâs beloved antiques would fit right into the traditional décor. I have to bury my parents before I think about starting up with Keith again. Before I can begin a new life, I have to mourn the old one.
Keith left the room. Bobby got into a fresh pair of boxers and a T-shirt and climbed into bed putting blue bunny on the nightstand where he could see it. He hoped blue bunny was the talisman Kitty believed it to be; he needed to get better. Bobby wished Keith was here with him, but he knew he made the right decision for the time being. He was sure heâd know what to do after he buried his parents. Bobby closed his eyes.
Bobby slept but had disturbing dreams that made his nap restless. Pieces of the accident flashed in front of his eyes, but they made no sense. At five, he got up, took a shower cap he found in the bathroom put it on and showered the stink of the last twenty-four hours off of his body. Bobby finally unwound enough to allow himself to think about how he ended up in Keithâs shower. He pictured his parents, the accident, and how they died; then another scene hit himâ he collapsed in the corner of the shower crying his heart out. He didnât even realize when the water turned icy. Itâs my fault theyâre dead.

Jason came to pick up Marla, who was going to help Olivia cook for tomorrowâs funeral breakfast. Jason handed Keith the suits through the door. Keith was watching Jason pull out of the driveway when he heard the shower and was tempted to go up and help. He made himself go to his chair and stay there. However when the shower kept running long after Keith knew the hot water tank emptied. He became alarmed and ran up the stairs to Bobby suite, bursting into the bathroom. He found Bobby shivering in the corner of the shower sobbing uncontrollably. Keith turned off the shower, grabbed a towel from one of the warming racks and pulled Bobby up from the floor.
âWhy did they die and I live? I had barely a scratch. I should have made them stay home.â
Keith wrapped the towel around Bobby and carried him to bed. He put Bobby under the covers and then sat down on the bed holding Bobby in his arms. His cell phone was in his pocket. He took it out and scrolled down to Gregâs number calling him, even though it was New Yearâs Day.
Greg answered on the first ring. âDr. Harrisâ¦â
âThis is Keith Anderson. I have Bobby Michaels here. Heâs staying with me. I found him in the shower hysterical huddled in the corner with icy water spraying over him.
