Chapter Nine

“Holly,” Colette said. “I need the Fun Divorce Club.”

Holly held the phone to her ear, trying to process Colette’s words.

“Why?” she finally said.

Colette went on to tell her Jenny was sick with the flu, Leroy had a black eye, and Heather was not speaking to her. “Will you be okay today without me? I can edit and manage from home for today, but my little one is puking and has a fever. I’m taking her to the pediatrician in an hour.”

“Oh. Poor Jenny. Sure, I’ll hold down the fort.”

“Thanks, Hols.” Colette hung up the phone.

A few hours later, Colette called again. “Well, one problem solved,” she told Holly. “Jenny has the flu. And a temp just a pinch above normal. Clear foods for a day and lots of rest. She should be fine in the morning. God willing.”

“What’s your other problem?”

“Oh, honey, I’ve got more than one. Take my daughter, Heather.” Colette went on to describe how when Heather was small like Jenny, mom and daughter had been best friends, just the two of them against the world. Heather had worshipped Colette. Wanted nothing to do with her daddy, who wasn’t home much anyway. “Now she wants to move back to Florida and live with Mitch.”

“Oh gee. I’m so sorry, Colette. Anything I can do?”

“No, just keep writing. God willing, tomorrow morning Jenny will wake up and be just fine.”

“So what was the other problem?”

“Leroy absolutely refuses to tell me where he’d gotten his black eye. Also Heather just texted me, from across the kitchen no less, that she needs her pink sweater for school tomorrow if it wasn’t too much trouble.”

“I guess you do need the Fun Divorce Club.” Holly had no experience in being a mom or even an aunt. She’d done a little babysitting, but that had been years ago.

“You know, the Tribune is more than a job, it’s a family legacy. My father took over the paper from my grandfather, who had inherited it from his father. Now it’s my turn, since my brother works on oil rigs in the Pacific and has no desire at all to move home to Blue Lake and take over the family business. I have to step in, and I’m enjoying it. Except Heather seems to resent the fact that I have a job, despite never wanting to speak to me again. Oh, no, Jenny just threw up again. Gotta go.”

Holly made a note to call and check on Colette later.

She definitely, certainly, one-hundred-percent needed the Fun Divorce Club.

India had a daughter in Heather’s class, and Kelly had been through the teen years already. The guys would know what to do about Leroy’s black eye. Of course with Jordan dead and Will in jail, that only left Patrick and Quinn for the guy component of the group.

Colette came to work the next morning, so Holly hoped everything had somehow righted itself.

Colette sat down across from Holly and sighed.

Holly looked up from her laptop. “What?”

Colette explained her dilemma. She was
