CHAPTER 20

BLUNT RELAXED in his chair as he waited in his usual spot for President Michaels to join him. The routine of keeping their meetings shielded from public view had become comfortable, even as Blunt loathed the inconvenience of it all. Ultimately, he understood the importance of making sure prying eyes weren’t able to connect the two men together other than at social gatherings.

While waiting for Michaels to arrive, Blunt pulled out a cigar and started gnawing on it. The habit he developed that helped him quit smoking many years ago had since morphed into a new one. Whenever he needed to mull over something, he chewed on a cigar.

When the door flung open, a Secret Service agent walked inside and scanned the room before making way for the president. Blunt leaned on his cane to stand up.

Michaels waved him off. “Oh, come on, J.D. No need to get up for me.”

Blunt grunted. “I’ve never disrespected the Commander in Chief, and I’m not about to start now just because it’s not as easy as it used to be to get up.”

Michaels peered at Blunt’s cane. “Is that new?”

“Good eye,” Blunt said. “It’s my new toy from an engineer we stole from Mossad who we’re giving a trial run.”

Michaels gave Blunt a long look before taking a seat. “You stole her from Mossad? Please don’t create more trouble for me than necessary.”

“Maybe stole isn’t the right word,” Blunt said. “She came on her own volition, but only after we rescued her when Mossad left her behind.”

“That little detail certainly changes the story.”

Blunt eased into a smile. “Well, let’s not waste any more time on that. I know you’re busy.”

“And I can see that you’re stressed,” Michaels said, gesturing toward Blunt’s cigar.

“Stressed?”

Michaels nodded. “The more you work that thing over in your mouth, the more bothered you are by something. It’s your tell. I’d whip you six ways from Sunday if I ever played you in poker.”

“I’m not trying to hide anything, but I am very concerned about something I just learned.”

“And what’s that?”

“What do you know about the Fullgood Initiative?” Blunt asked.

Michaels cocked his head to one side and frowned. “The Fullgood Initiative?”

“Yeah, that’s right. Ever heard of it?”

“I can’t say that I have, but I’ll ask around about it.”

“I’d be careful about that, if I were you.”

Michaels squinted. “I’m the president of this country, and I shouldn’t have to be careful about asking about something like that. Mind telling me what’s so dangerous about this organization?”

“That’s what I’m trying to figure out,” Blunt said. “All I know at this point is that they are run by some people at the Pentagon.”

“And what exactly do these people do?”

“Like I said, my knowledge is limited. However, I know that they tried to kill two of my agents this week. And if it hadn’t been for a freelancer I hired on, those two would be dead.”

“Which two?”

“Black and—”

“That wouldn’t be so bad now, would it?” Michaels quipped.

“I know you don’t like him, but he has saved your life a couple of times.
