Chapter 17

Jax ended up eating dinner at our house. As he went into the living room to watch an episode of Last Man Standing with my dad and Zoe, I helped my mom clean up the kitchen.

“What are you even doing home?” I asked her as I rinsed off a pan. “It’s Tuesday. Shouldn’t you be at work?”

“Oh. You weren’t around, so I didn’t get a chance to tell you, did I?” Mom asked.

“I guess not.” I knew that I shouldn’t have been offended because I was rarely home anymore, but I couldn’t help but feel sort of out of the loop. I had a feeling that Zoe already knew whatever it was and that I was the last one to know.

“I quit my job.” As she dried one of the plates with a dishtowel, my mom glanced over at me with a proud smile.

“What? Why?!” I asked, my voice raising a few notches higher than I’d intended, but I couldn’t help it. It was so unlike my mom to just quit her job and act like it was no big deal.

“It just seemed like a really good time,” she replied with a shrug. “I’m never home, and I never get to spend any time with you girls. Our schedules are so conflicting. When you’re home from school, I’m at work. When I’m home, you’re at school.”

“But how will the bills get paid?” Of course, I wasn’t too worried now that I knew Jax was a multimillionaire, but I didn’t want him to just pay my mom’s bills if there were other options. I didn’t want us to have to rely on him for anything.

“Your father has offered to pay for all of our living expenses,” she explained.

Knowing that Demetrius was only a few feet away, I tried to contain my anger. How was it that he and my mom had only seen each other again for just one night, and yet he had completely managed to waltz his way back into our lives? Not only had he just moved into our house, but he had somehow convinced my mom that quitting her job was the best thing for her? How could she not see that she had gone from doing this whole parenting thing for years without him to becoming completely reliant on him?

She might not have seen it, but I realized that was exactly what Demetrius was trying to do. He wanted her to be in this weak, vulnerable position where she was co-dependent on him. It was probably his plan to completely isolate her from the rest of the world so that he had her all to himself. Or maybe he wanted to cut off any ties she had to Cedar Falls so that it would
