He watched Ruthanne while she headed away.

“What a brave, crazy, and loving woman.”

An old man calmly came up behind Peter. “Pastor Avail, please help me finish reading the book of Psalms,” he said.

Peter replied, “Mr. Jefferson, there is no way we are going to get through the whole book of Psalms together today. That’s 150 chapters.”

“Please, as if you have plans today, Pastor Avail. With me being the treasurer, I know your schedule.” Mr. Jefferson gave an instigative smile, adding, “I must admit, though, that was a pretty young lady.”

Peter pressed his lips together. “Mr. Jefferson, the conversation between that young woman and me was professional and pure.”

“I believe you. Take it from an old goat like me not to be so serious. Otherwise, you can miss out on what God is putting in front of you. Professionalism also includes recognizing miracles and divine connections. Don’t ever forget that.”

Peter began to return to the pews with Mr. Jefferson and mumbled, “I’m the one that’s supposed to be giving biblical advice, but this old man seems to have a good point.”

Mr. Jefferson smiled at Peter and patted him on his back. “Well, now that this old goat has made a point, let’s get to reading.” Mr. Jefferson went to the front aisle, excitedly laughing.

The other four people in the church looked at him snobbishly as he moved down the aisle.

“Don’t you old goats look at me as if I’d lost my mind. I’m sanctified.”

Peter shook his head and apologized to the other members while he approached the front of the church to sit with Mr. Jefferson.

Mr. Jefferson looked at Peter and chuckled. “Pastor Avail, maybe you need to take up the habit of running if you’re having trouble keeping up with me.”

Peter chuckled, responding, “I may have to try that, Mr. Jefferson. Now, let’s get started.”
