“This is unsettling news,” Shuom said to Ree, their heart pumping too wildly. They feared it might burst, but their third mind seemed not to care.

Ree nodded, his pink, forked tongue flicking out. That was all the movement he gave.

“Nothing to say?” Shuom asked. They had feared the drakeman in the beginning, but Ree had taken his irritation and used it to fuel giving Shuom advice. How to throw their shots better, what to do during a battle.

Ree glanced at the wyrm with those dead, reptilian eyes. “What is there to say besides the obvious?”

Embarrassment heated Shuom’s body.

“This is a disaster.” Shuom gulped down air, throat expanding to fill their lungs. “Zhuiaruu has tens of thousands of shrubmen. And it’s a busy port. Much of Uiaaaph’s grains, fruits, vegetables, and hemp products are shipped from there. People will starve without it. The Desert City-States along the coast of the Hot Sands to the southeast particularly rely on them. Famine will grip them.”

“Worse is coming,” Thaaph said from where he sat on his vinewife’s shoulders. “Lady Shadow alive means the others we killed might very well be in the flesh.”

Lord Bithin landed naked on the beach, her body dripping with water. She was far too jiggly for Shuom’s tastes. They could not fathom why Vounée and Euddán couldn’t stop looking at the ridiculous sacks of fat as they quivered. They knew their purpose—all mammals had mammaries—but not their attraction. Beauty was slender and flexible. Two coming together, wrapped up as one.

Memories of sweet nights with Reyw and even those brief encounters with Espitates Chey to relieve their urges filled Shuom’s first mind for a moment. Almost as if their thoughts were retreating from the horror of Lady Shadow’s rampage through Zhuiaruu.

“Something happened?” said Lord Bithin as she wrapped herself up in the wet cloth of her toga. She glanced at Euddán. “The sleeping girl is awake. Is that bad news?”

“She dreamed of Lady Shadow destroying Zhuiaruu searching for us,” Shuom said.

Lord Bithin’s face tightened over her skull as she finished cladding herself in the soaked garment. “She always was . . . destructive. She got a taste for unleashing Negation in the war. Though I thought you killed her.”

“I did,” Euddán said. “Now she’s alive in the flesh, or so Zai’s visions say. She’s a Revelation sorcerer.”

“Ah,” said Lord Bithin. Red flames engulfed her body for a moment. When they faded, her toga was dry. “Then I believe Wuufay will destroy this city. Any time to stop her?”

Euddán shook his head.

“Zai thinks it’s this evening,” said Shuom.

“Right,” Lord Bithin said. “Nothing to be done about it except to be thankful she is nowhere near us.”

“Lord Bithin, you said you would be reborn,” Thaaph said. “You mentioned that Lady Iith’jau would never be reborn if she didn’t take over Vounée. Any idea how that works? How Lady Shadow could be alive once more?”

The woman shook her head, her wet tresses clinging to her shoulders and neck. “The Apostasy kept back information. They just promised we would regain our bodies.
